Lightning Expanding Digital Capabilities

LA VERGNE, TN – Lightning Print Inc., a subsidiary of Ingram Industries Inc., has named G. Phil Clark as chief technology officer and Susan Peterson as vice president for publisher development to strengthen the company’s position as a leading provider of print-on-demand services and expand its digital content delivery capabilities.

Phil Clark will be responsible for all aspects of Lightning’s technology infrastructure, research, product development, and strategic alliances. His experience in developing high capacity print-on-demand production control systems and designing digital services will give Lightning a competitive advantage in the industry.

Clark comes to Lightning from Danka Services International, where he served most recently as vice president and chief technology officer. At Danka, Clark drove the company’s technology and digital services strategy. Previously, he was a founding senior manager at Kodak Imaging Services (now Danka), where he established the firm’s technology integration organization. He received a master's degree in computer engineering from National Technological University and his bachelor's degree in computer science from Covenant College.

Susan Peterson, who has 25 years of experience in trade publishing, will lead a high-level executive team in forging key partnerships with clients in the book and corporate marketplace. These relationships will significantly enhance Lightning’s access to content for its print-on-demand and future e-book businesses.

"We pride ourselves in listening to the publishers and understanding their needs. We plan to build on that reputation among publishers in an ongoing effort to grow our digital library."

Previously, Peterson was a retail sales executive at Bantam Doubleday Dell, managing the sale of all of the firm’s product lines into the retail market. She has also served as the director of sales and marketing at Running Press, where she guided the launch of SISTERS, a million-copy seller, onto the bestseller list. Peterson has been a consultant to Ingram Book Group since September and will continue to work in the New York City area.

The announcement of Clark and Peterson comes on the heels of a number of other major announcements in recent weeks, all aimed at expanding Lightning's capabilities and services including: * New President & CEO Ed Marino named * Plans underway to open new, expanded printing facility in La Vergne, TN in April, 2000 * New press installed and staff expanded to handle increased printing production demand at the La Vergne, TN, production facility * Digital book library expanded to include more than 7,000 actively-ordered titles * Experienced a tripling of demand in the fourth quarter of 1999 for Lightning Print's new drop ship service for publishers. Lightning can now ship directly to customers at the publisher's request. * Lightning program expanded to include more than 400 participating publishers * Surpassed the half-million mark in the number of print-on-demand books shipped. The total is expected to exceed 700,000 by the end of March.
